Press History

Fordham University Press, a member of the Association of American University Presses (AAUP) since 1938, was established in 1907 not only to represent and uphold the values and traditions of the University itself, but also to further those values and traditions through the dissemination of scholarly research and ideas.

The press publishes primarily in the humanities and the social sciences, with an emphasis on the fields of anthropology, philosophy, theology, history, classics, communications, economics, sociology, business, political science, and law, as well as literature and the fine arts. Additionally, the press publishes books focusing on the metropolitan New York region and books of interest to the general public.

BOOKSTORES: Net 30 days. The listing of a price for any title is not intended to control the resale price thereof. Discount schedule applies to domestic sales only. The notation “t” next to the price of a title indicates trade discount. The notation “s” next to the price of a title indicates short discount titles. The notation “x” next to the price of a title indicates a super short discount. All other titles are available at a trade discount. To obtain the maximum discount on short discount titles, please contact you local sales representative.

INDIVIDUALS: Order at your local bookstore or directly from New York University Press. All orders from individuals must be pre-paid by credit card, check (drawn on a U.S. bank), or by U.S. money order. No cash discount. New York State residents, please add 8.375% sales tax; Pennsylvania residents, please add 6% sales tax; Canadian residents, please add 7% GST to all orders. EXAMINATION COPY POLICY
All paperback editions of books published by Fordham University Press will be available to professors at a cost of $7.50 to cover shipping and handling. Checks should be made out to NYU Press. Examination copies of some hardcover books are available at a 30% discount. If you are interested in a hardcover edition, please call 1-800-996-6987. To obtain an examination copy, please submit your request in writing, using your academic letterhead, and provide your name, shipping address (no P.O. box numbers), telephone number or email, course name and season, and anticipated enrollment. All examination copy orders must be pre-paid. Fordham University Press reserves the right to limit the number of books sent to an individual in a year and may limit the quantity of examination copies distributed of a particular title. Examination copies may not be returned.

RETURNS POLICY
Without prior authorization, books in clean, resalable condition are eligible for return after 9 days, but no more than 24 months from date of invoice. To receive full credit, the package must clearly indicate the invoice number, invoice date, discount, and list price. Failure to include this information will result in a delay of credit, and returns credited at 50%. Return of books received in damaged condition and short ship claims must be made no more than 60 days from invoice date. Credit will not be given for claims made past this time. All books received at our warehouse in damaged condition more than 60 days past the invoice date will be credited at a 50% discount. To ensure that books you received in damaged condition are credited, be certain to include paperwork indicating the invoice and date. Titles hat have been declared out of print are not eligible for return. There are no cash refunds—credit only.

Manuscript Submission

Fordham University Press publishes scholarly books in the humanities and social sciences, as well as trade books of interest to the general public. Its list emphasizes philosophy, religion, theology, literature, history, and media studies, and books of both scholarly and general appeal about New York City and the Hudson Valley. The Press also publishes the annual winner of the Poets Out Loud contest; for submission visit www.poetsoutloud.com. The Press does not publish fiction.

The Press welcomes book proposals in the fields in which we generally publish.

Proposals should be sent as hard copy to the following address, directed to the appropriate person. We do not accept submissions via e-mail.

For proposals concerning history in general, especially World War II, the Civil War and Reconstruction, politics, urban and ethnic studies, media, and New York and the region:

We recommend that proposals include the following:

  • a cover letter of two to four pages outlining the book's argument and its contribution to its field
  • a current curriculum vitae
  • a prospectus giving a detailed outline of the book (usually three to eight pages)
  • a sample chapter (optional)
We will attempt to give you an initial response within six weeks.

Note: We do not return materials unless you provide a prepaid return envelope. Please do not send any irreplaceable materials.


Permissions

To request permission for copying materials from Fordham University Press publications, please write or fax with full information (author, title, complete description of material to be reprinted, and a brief description of your project) to the attention of the Permissions Department at the address above. If the requested material is to be used in a coursepack, please indicate the expected enrollment; if to be reprinted in a book, indicate the proposed print run and price, and the expected date of publication.
